Gull, Blennerville

Gull, Blennerville

Above) Probable Herring Gull, Blennerville, Co. Kerry, 1st July 2009 (Photo: Davey Farrar). Although initially identified, on brief views, as an Audouin's Gull, a number of discrepencies are apparent from the few photos the observer was able to take in the short time the bird was on view. Primary projection and eye position, along with a broad tertial crescent, largish size (as large, or larger than nearby Lesser Black-backed Gulls), lack of a pale subterminal band and pale tip to the bill, and a seemingly pale eye, all rule against Audouin's. Nevertheless, the bill was a deep red colour and the legs appeared long and black, and, if nothing else, this gull shows how difficult it can be to readiily identify an unusual aberrant, and/or a stained, bird. See also here for another putative Audouin's Gull at Dargan Bay, Belfast, N. Ireland, 21st February 2006.
