Quite simply the best field guide for birding in Ireland. Compact, accurate and with excellent plates and text.
Although it covers all European and North African species as well, it is compact, thorough, accurate and beautifully illustrated. With this superb book you have all you need to identify any species at any time of the year, with detailed text on size, habitat, range, identification and voice and distribution maps. The only criticism is that the type and images are very small, though the large format version is available shortly. If you only take one book with you, it has to be this one.

Superb artwork, good text and a good backup to the Collins guide.
Again, covers all of Europe and North Africa and though the quality of the plates is a little variable, the general standard is very high. Jonsson's paintings are rightly renowned for their accuracy and character, and many of the plates in this book are quite superb. An invaluable field guide for Ireland.

The only complete guide specific to Ireland, covering all species and with good maps.
As the only modern guide to Ireland's birds, this book is worth getting as a good general reference. Covers identification, voice, and status in Ireland, with accurate, up-to-date maps. An introduction gives a good overview of Irish ornithology and an appendix describes vagrants to Ireland. Difficult to find now, with very few remaining in stock, but an essential book for a birdwatching trip in Ireland.
