The Irish race of Jay
Garrulus glandarius hibernicus appears generally darker
and duller than both the British race G.g.rufitergum, and
the Continental race G.g.glandarius.
In comparison
to the British race, hibernicus shows darker ear-coverts,
sides of the head and mantle, while the underparts of the British
race are slightly paler, especially towards the vent.
The dark
crown streaking on the British race tends to be thinner with broader
white edges. This can give the crown a whiter appearance than
seen on Irish birds.
British Jays
also show whiter throats and have a tendency to show a white area
immediately below the eye which is rarely seen on birds of the
Irish race.

The
Continental race shows greyish to greyish-brown upperparts, while
the underparts appear even paler than those of the British race.
The darker Irish race therefore differs significantly from the
Continental race.
There have
been no documented records of either the British or Continental
race in Ireland.
