You can hire Eric,
Ireland's leading bird expert, for a visit to one of Irelands
best winter birdwatching locations, the North Slobs Bird Reserve.
Situated
in Co.Wexford this reserve has an interpretative centre, comfortable
hides and an elevated observation tower, allowing unrivalled views
of a staggering variety of bird species.
Anyone who
has witnessed the awesome spectacle of the world's largest concentration
of Greenland White-fronted Geese will testify that it is a birdwatching
experience of a lifetime!
Flocks of
hundreds of these birds can be seen at many points from within
the reserve and each evening the air is filled with thousands
of birds all flying to roost...
The rich
variety of birdlife also attracts many raptors with Hen Harriers,
Peregrines and Merlins present every winter.

Brent
Geese (Eric
Dempsey)
Flocks of thousands of Pale-bellied Brent Geese can be found
in Wexford.

Following
our visit to the centre, we hope to visit Raven Wood Nature Reserve.
Based on
the coastline, the Raven not only boasts a wealth of woodland
species, but close by, we hope to see seaduck such as scoters,
as well as Red and Great Northern Divers and several species of
grebes.
As dusk arrives
we will situate ourselves in a prime position to see Woodcock
emerge from their daylight cover and circle over us as they leave
the woodlands to feed on the open fields and pools of the Sloblands.
We will undoubtedly
be first alerted by the startling, high-pitched squeaking call,
and on closer flybys we will hear the quieter deep 'croaking'....
